A Good Soldier

Sometime we might feel like times are getting too hard or everything keeps falling apart all around us. No matter how hard we try to follow Christ and do good, something happens and we are pulled away by our own reason. We think we know the best way to fix the situation, but it goes against what the Bible says. One thing we must keep in mind is that we are at war. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 tells us we walk in the flesh, but we do not war according to the flesh. Our weapons are not carnal (of the flesh) but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. We are in a spiritual battle with the devil who will use things of this world and our fleshly body to pull us away from God.
Do we know more than God? Didn’t He tell us in Proverbs 3:5-6 to trust Him with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding; but in all our ways acknowledge Him and He will direct our path. We have to bring every stray thought that wanders into fleshly desires of this world back to the ways from above.
Isaiah 55:8-9
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts than our thoughts. God can’t lie (Titus 1:2), and even though we think our way is right (Proverbs 21:2), God knows what’s best for us. He is preparing us for the kingdom. We must be fully obedient to God, for He is training us to be able to judge and punish the angels when we finish this life and our obedience is fulfilled (1 Corinthians 6:3). This “judge” in Greek is krínō – to try, condemn, punish. So to prepare for war we must put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-17) to be able to stand against the schemings of the devil.
You are a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:3-4 says we must endure the hardships of this life as a good soldier. Also, no one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. Now think about this. In a war, what would happen if a man didn’t follow direct orders from the commander? He would be punished and kicked out if he repeatedly does so. Read Verse 5 (of 2 Timothy 2). It says, “Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.” He gave us the rules in the Bible. So instead of doing things our own way, going after things of this world, and being led astray by the trickery of the devil, stand strong on the Word of God. Jesus said (in Matthew 10:22 and Matthew 24:13) that those who endure to the end will be saved. Endure hardships. Be a good soldier.
I heard about this analogy on Pando, but you know in old war movies when the final battle is about to happen, they are beat up, tired, half scared and worried because they are outnumbered. Reinforcements are on the way, if only they can last till they get there. Then you hear, “the cavalry is coming! The cavalry is here!” It’s more reinforcements, more backup, more weapons, power, and strength.
It makes so much sense. The call it cavalry. Our reinforcements, backup, weapons, power, and strength comes from what happened on Calvary. They crucified our Lord and Savior, laid Him in a tomb, and after 3 days, with the power from God Almighty that was bestowed to Him, broke the chains of death and rose and took His place at the right hand of God. He sent us a Helper and makes intercession for us to God.
But there’s more! Read 2 Kings 6:8-23. God was with Elisha, and He is with you too! With all of us! When in hard times, trouble, tight spots, pray and thank God for the cavalry that’s coming, that’s on the way. Heavenly forces. Angels with the power of God. You will never be outnumbered! When the enemy comes against you, rather it’s evil spirits or the devil himself, anger, addiction, greed, guilt, pain, whatever, remember God is with you and help from heaven is on the way. That help will always be bigger, stronger, more powerful than the enemy. When trouble shows up, heaven comes down. The cavalry, Calvary, is coming. God is fighting for you. He will step in and do the things you can’t do. But remember, Luke 1:37 says, “For with God nothing will be impossible.”
